Erykah Badu is a singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress from the United States. Erykah Badu was born in Dallas, Texas as Erica Abi Wright. After their father, William Wright Jr., divorced, Badu’s mother raised her, her brother Eevin, and her sister alone.

The children’s maternal and paternal grandmothers frequently assisted in their care. At the age of four, Badu began singing and dancing at the Dallas Theater Center and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) under the tutelage of her godmother, Gwen Hargrove, and uncle, TBAAL founder Curtis King.

Badu’s debut album, Baduizm, was released in early 1997. The album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number two on the Billboard charts and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the United States. Baduizm’s commercial and critical success helped establish Badu as one of the leading artists in the emerging neo soul genre.
