Who is Hugh Grosvenor?

Born on 29 January, 1991, Hugh Grosvenor is the current Duke of Westminster. He was born as the Earl of Westminster, but assumed the title of Duke when his father passed away in 2016.

His baptism ceremony was attended by King Charles III, who was named as one of his godparents. 

Through his mother Natalia, Mr Grosvenor descends from the Russian Imperial House of Romanov, with relations to Nicholas I of Russia. 

Raised at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, Hugh Grosvenor was privately educated at Ellesmere College before obtaining a BSc in Countryside Management from Newcastle University. 

After his graduation, Grosvenor worked in estate management at the food and agriculture company Wheatsheaf Group, an investment business based in the Eaton estate and owned by the Grosvenor Group. 

Afterwards, he held an account manager position at sustainability company bio-bean, which turns coffee-related waste into bioproducts such as biofuels and logs. 

‘Hugh’s not a networker or a schmoozer, nor is he the slightest bit boastful,’ was the assessment of one long-standing friend.

‘He was raised to recognise that a lot of people — almost everybody in fact — would try to get close to him because of his money.’

The current Duke of Westminster is not yet married, but his engagement to Olivia Henson was announced in April 2023. 

He confirmed the engagement through a statement, which reads: ‘The Duke of Westminster and Miss Olivia Henson are delighted to announce they are engaged to be married.

‘The couple, who have been together for two years, recently became engaged at the Duke’s family home at Eaton Hall in Cheshire.

‘Members of both their families are absolutely delighted with the news.

‘Hugh Grosvenor, The Duke of Westminster, is Grosvenor’s Chair as well as Chair of the Westminster Foundation. Miss Henson works for Belazu, a B-Corp certified food company based in London.’

Away from public scrutiny, Hugh is also a big football fan. A fanatical Liverpool supporter, he even used to sleep in the club’s red strip as a child. 

His late father even once had trials for Premier League side Fulham.

Sadly, the Duke’s father Gerald Grosvenor suffered a sudden heart attack while out on a country walk, and died aged 64 in 2016.

As his father’s successor, Hugh became an instant billionaire. The 7th Duke of Westminster inherited a fortune of £9.3billion.

Additionally, he inherited 300 acres across the affluent London areas of Mayfair and Belgravia, as well as estates in Oxford, Scotland and properties around the globe. This includes his current residence at Eaton Hall. the 10,872-acre family estate. 

He has previously represented the country at Olympic Skeet Shooting competitions both internationally and in the UK.

The Duke also supports the rehabilitation of wounded or injured members of the Armed Forces and donated £2.5million to the Health Service when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, but said he was so ‘humbled’ by the work of doctors and nurses he wanted to give another £10million.
